In the post above showing the Andromeda galaxy, the caption below it says that the galaxy is 2.5 million light years away from us. Keep in mind that the light you see in this picture shows the galaxy not how it is now but how it was 2.5 million years ago because the light you see now has taken 2.5 million years to reach us.
Our sun is the ultimate source of energy that enables all life to continue to live here on earth. More about that in a future post. The sun on a quiet day about 8 days ago: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap060611.html
Picture of a nebula within our Milky Way galaxy that is shaped like a cat's paw and has created suns ten times larger than our own sun relatively recently: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap060628.html
From today's(June 20 2006) Globe and Mail under the Social Studies section: Hollywood goes to hell? "Southern California is riding on the Pacific tectonic plate toward the northwest about as fast as your fingernails grow," writes Neal Matthews in the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It will eventually be subducted back under one of the other sliding plates covering Earth's surface, to be melted back into magma."
