I have read that about 25%of the Quran is made up of verses relating to nature and cosmology(about 750 verses). This in itself is remarkable but it explains clearly the inspiration for all the frenzied scientific activity during, especially, the first 400 years of Islam before ideological struggles between the orthodoxy and rationalists gradually shut it down.
Here is an example from science that confirms a quranic verse I quoted earlier: the verse, of course, was revealed in the 7th century to the Prophet:
Chapter 51, Verse 47: We built the heavens with might, and We expand it wide.
The rational scientific proof for the expansion of the universe was discovered only in the 20th century, 1300 years after the scriptural revelation:
In the 1920s and early 1930s Vesto Slipher and Edwin Hubble were studying galaxies using the newly installed 100 inch telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory in California. When they did a spectrographic analysis of the light beaming in from numerous galaxies, over 90% of them were red-shifted. Just like the doppler-shifting of the sound of a fire-truck screaming by, light, being a wave, can also doppler-shift and a galaxy moving towards us blueshifts, ie, the light wavelength appears shorter than it really is, whereas one moving away from us redshifts, ie, the light wavelength appears longer than it actually is. In the electromagnetic spectrum, red light has a longer wavelength than blue light. The conclusion drawn(and later confirmed by other experiments) was that all galaxies that we can see from earth are moving away from us and, more amazingly, those galaxies that are even further away than closer ones are moving away at a faster speed than the closer ones.
