Here, from the NASA website, is a picture of 2 large galaxies using a special microscope. These galaxies are 140 million light years away from earth. They are in the process of colliding with each other, a process that has already begun but will take another 500 million years to complete.
The same type of collision will occur between our Milky Way galaxy and our immediate neighbour, the Andromeda galaxy in about 7 billion years time.
